Summary:

Judge Liam O’Grady found that the patents embodied the abstract idea of offering a map system with information about the physical layout and shape of the location and relationships to geographical landmarks.  The claim simply tied a general purpose computer to the long standing practice of providing maps of larger areas along with corresponding maps of smaller portions of these larger maps with more detail.  Furthermore, the claims did not offer “something more” to render them patentable. The claims did nothing more than describe an abstract idea with the instruction to apply it to the computer.
